Aftermath
On August 9, 1996, an LGBT advocacy and education center opened in Ashland, named the Abdill-Ellis Lambda Community Center in honor of the murdered pair.
In April 2001, Sen. Gordon H. Smith cited the murders when arguing in the U.S. Senate on behalf of a hate crimes provision proposed for inclusion in the Local Law Enforcement Act of 2001.
The crime was the subject of a television show that aired in August 2012.
