Birdlife

There are a variety of New Zealand native birds to be seen on and near the track. Parrots like the Kaka and Kea can often be seen and heard and are quite large in comparison to the Yellow-crowned parakeet. Smaller birds that are conspicuous are the Grey Warbler, Brown Creeper, South Island Robin, South Island Tomtit and the rare Yellowhead. Hard to see is the tiny Rifleman New Zealands smallest bird.
