Rossby Wave

Rossby Wave

Atmospheric Rossby waves are giant meanders in high-altitude winds that are a major influence on weather. They are not to be confused with oceanic Rossby waves, which move along the thermocline: that is, the boundary between the warm upper layer of the ocean and the cold deeper part of the ocean.

Rossby waves are a subset of inertial waves.

Famous quotes containing the word wave:

    As the bird trims her to the gale,
    I trim myself to the storm of time,
    I man the rudder, reef the sail,
    Obey the voice at eve obeyed in prime:
    “Lowly faithful, banish fear,
    Right onward drive unharmed;
    The port, well worth the cruise, is near,
    And every wave is charmed.”
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)
