Roshanara Begum - Death

Death

That opportunity presented itself in late 1671, when Roshanara was discovered with yet another secret lover in her garden. The incident enraged Aurangazeb and sealed Roshanara's end and she was poisoned with her lover. It remains unclear as to who poisoned her; whether it was her own or the desire her lover to take poison. Others suspect Aurangzeb to have ordered her poisoning. However, the latter view is deemed unlikely by historians due to Aurangzebs apparent partiality towards her in a number of cases. She died at the age of 54. Aurangazeb had her interred in the Roshanara Bagh, a garden that she had designed and commissioned herself.

Famous quotes containing the word death:

There is something antique, even, in his style of treating his subject, reminding us that Heroes and Demi-gods, Fates and Furies, still exist; the common man is nothing to him, but after death the hero is apotheosized and has a place in heaven, as in the religion of the Greeks.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

half-way up the hill, I see the Past
Lying beneath me with its sounds and sights,—
A city in the twilight dim and vast,
With smoking roofs, soft bells, and gleaming lights,—
And hear above me on the autumnal blast
The cataract of Death far thundering from the heights.
    Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (1809–1882)

Tear out the close vermiculate crease
Where death crawled angrily at bay.
    Allen Tate (1899–1979)
