Rosh HaAyin - History

History

Rosh HaAyin was founded in the 1950s near the site of ancient Antipatris, on the grounds of a Palestinian village Majdal Sadek, also known as Majdal Yaba (means the tower of Jaffa). Palestinian residents were forced to leave in July 1948, after the establishment of the state of Israel. Many of the Jewish residents after 1950 were Yemenite Jews airlifted to Israel in 1949 and 1950 in Operation Magic Carpet.

For decades Rosh HaAyin was known as "a Yemenite town". However, in the 1990s extensive new neighborhoods were built, constituting in effect a whole new town, which drew a considerable number of Israelis of other origins. The town still has, however, a large Yemenite population - concentrated in the older neighborhoods.

Rosh HaAyin is named after its location at the mouth of the Yarkon Spring (rosh = head, ayin = spring).

Like their personal lives, women’s history is fragmented, interrupted; a shadow history of human beings whose existence has been shaped by the efforts and the demands of others.
    Elizabeth Janeway (b. 1913)

History is the present. That’s why every generation writes it anew. But what most people think of as history is its end product, myth.
