Ron Herbel - First Major League Hit

First Major League Hit

In 1965 Herbel earned a spot in the starting rotation on his way to a 12-9 record for a Giants team that won 14 straight games in September, with Herbel pitching the best ball of his career, only to lose the pennant by 2 games to a Dodger team that won its last 15 games. He registered his first major league hit and RBI on May 21 in his first major league game on astroturf, while holding the Houston Astros to just five hits themselves in the complete game victory. It was his only hit of the season, though he was credited with a second run batted in on July 28 when he walked with the bases loaded.

Famous quotes containing the words major, league and/or hit:

    The major men
That is different. They are characters beyond
    Reality, composed thereof. They are
The fictive man created out of men.
They are men but artificial men.
    Wallace Stevens (1879–1955)

He will deliver you from six troubles; in seven no harm shall touch you. In famine he will redeem you from death, and in war from the power of the sword. You shall be hidden from the scourge of the tongue, and shall not fear destruction when it comes. At destruction and famine you shall laugh, and shall not fear the wild animals of the earth. For you shall be in league with the stones of the field, and the wild animals shall be at peace with you.
    Bible: Hebrew, Job 5:19-23.

With deep men, as with deep wells, it takes a long time for anything that falls into them to hit bottom. Onlookers, who almost never wait long enough, readily suppose that such men are callous and unresponsive—or even boring.
    Friedrich Nietzsche (1844–1900)
