Famous quotes containing the words roman catholic, roman, catholic, green and/or bay:
“It is a dogma of the Roman Church that the existence of God can be proved by natural reason. Now this dogma would make it impossible for me to be a Roman Catholic. If I thought of God as another being like myself, outside myself, only infinitely more powerful, then I would regard it as my duty to defy him.”
—Ludwig Wittgenstein (18891951)
“Plato is philosophy, and philosophy, Plato,at once the glory and the shame of mankind, since neither Saxon nor Roman have availed to add any idea to his categories.”
—Ralph Waldo Emerson (18031882)
“Every country gets the circus it deserves. Spain gets bullfights. Italy gets the Catholic Church. America gets Hollywood.”
—Erica Jong (b. 1942)
“She never told her love,
But let concealment, like a worm i the bud
Feed on her damask cheek. She pined in thought,
And with a green and yellow melancholy
She sat like patience on a monument,
Smiling at grief. Was not this love indeed?”
—William Shakespeare (15641616)
“The very dogs that sullenly bay the moon from farm-yards in these nights excite more heroism in our breasts than all the civil exhortations or war sermons of the age.”
—Henry David Thoreau (18171862)
