It was constructed early in World War II for the Ministry of Supply, with the Ministry of Works acting as Agents. It was designed as an Explosive ROF, to produce RDX, which was then a new experimental high-explosive developed at the RGPF Waltham Abbey. Famous quotes containing the word history:

We aspire to be something more than stupid and timid chattels, pretending to read history and our Bibles, but desecrating every house and every day we breathe in.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

Philosophy of science without history of science is empty; history of science without philosophy of science is blind.
    Imre Lakatos (1922–1974)

Considered in its entirety, psychoanalysis won’t do. It’s an end product, moreover, like a dinosaur or a zeppelin; no better theory can ever be erected on its ruins, which will remain for ever one of the saddest and strangest of all landmarks in the history of twentieth-century thought.
    Peter B. Medawar (1915–1987)
