The Rodrigues Triple Point (also, Rodrigues Triple Junction) is a geologic triple junction in the southern Indian Ocean where three tectonic plates meet: the African Plate, the Indo-Australian Plate, and the Antarctic Plate. The triple point is named for the island of Rodrigues which lies nearby.
The boundaries of the three plates which meet at the Rodrigues Triple Junction are all oceanic spreading centers, making it an R-R-R type triple junction. They are: the Central Indian Ridge (between the African and Indo-Australian plates); the Southwest Indian Ridge (between the African and Antarctic plates); and the Southeast Indian Ridge (between the Indo-Australian and Antarctic plates).
Famous quotes containing the words triple and/or point:
“And we fairies, that do run
By the triple Hecates team
From the presence of the sun,
Following darkness like a dream,
Now are frolic. Not a mouse
Shall disturb this hallowed house.”
—William Shakespeare (15641616)
“It used to be said that, socially speaking, Philadelphia asked who a person is, New York how much is he worth, and Boston what does he know. Nationally it has now become generally recognized that Boston Society has long cared even more than Philadelphia about the first point and has refined the asking of who a person is to the point of demanding to know who he was. Philadelphia asks about a mans parents; Boston wants to know about his grandparents.”
—Cleveland Amory (b. 1917)
