The Rockefeller family (/ˈrɒkɨfɛlər/) is an American industrial, political and banking family that made one of the world's largest fortunes in the oil business during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with John D. Rockefeller and his brother William Rockefeller primarily through the Standard Oil. The family is also known for its long association with and financial interest in the Chase Manhattan Bank, now part of JPMorgan Chase. They are generally seen as one of the most powerful families in the history of the United States.

Famous quotes containing the words rockefeller and/or family:

Maybe this is like the Old Testament. It was visited upon us and maybe we’re going to benefit from it.
    —Nelson A. Rockefeller (1908–1979)

Being so wrong about her makes me wonder now how often I am utterly wrong about myself. And how wrong she might have been about her mother, how wrong he might have been about his father, how much of family life is a vast web of misunderstandings, a tinted and touched-up family portrait, an accurate representation of fact that leaves out only the essential truth.
    Anna Quindlen (b. 1952)
