Rock Circus - Theatre Show

Theatre Show

The revolving theatre at the top of the attraction featured some groundbreaking animatronic performers - seen for the first time in the UK. Among them were the following:

  • The Beatles (in full "Sergeant Peppers" costumes)
  • Janis Joplin (the character goes from a sitting position on a park bench to a standing position singing Me and Bobby McGee while holding a Southern Comfort bottle)
  • Madonna (doing Like A Virgin, lying on a sumptuous couch with a green-eyed leopard, and revealed from behind a silk curtain)
  • Bruce Springsteen (performing Born in the USA on stadium stage)
  • Elvis Presley (Love Me Tender)
  • Bob Dylan (The Times They Are a-Changin with guitar and harmonica)
  • David Bowie
  • Phil Collins
  • KISS (complete with Gene Simmons moving tongue)
  • Sid Vicious
  • An unforgettable appearance by The Eurythmics - Annie Lennox's head splits down the middle to reveal Dave Stewart inside!

As the auditorium rotated, the animatronic characters were revealed either from behind a curtain, or they were raised into view. The control systems for the animatronics were in the 'basement' of the theatre, below where the audience saw the performers.

The original show had audio fed to the audience via the infra-red headsets they wore in the rest of the attraction, but in later years, a sound system was installed to improve the quality of the sound.

Famous quotes containing the words theatre and/or show:

The poem of the mind in the act of finding
What will suffice. It has not always had
To find: the scene was set; it repeated what
    Was in the script.
    Then the theatre was changed
To something else. Its past was a souvenir.
    Wallace Stevens (1879–1955)

    Men themselves have wondered
    What they see in me.
    They try so much
    But they can’t touch
    My inner mystery.
When I try to show them,
They say they still can’t see.
    I say,
It’s in the arch of my back,
    The sun of my smile,
    The ride of my breasts,
    The grace of my style.
    I’m a woman
    Phenomenally.
    Phenomenal woman,
    That’s me.
    Maya Angelou (b. 1928)
