Personal Life

Siegel grew up in New York City, the son of Joseph, a commercial education teacher, and Edith, a secretary at Stuyvesant High School. His maternal grandfather claimed to descend from rabbinical scholar Mordechai Yoffe. After graduating in 1964 from Stuyvesant, Siegel studied at Columbia University, graduating in 1968. During this time he was an anchor for the reporting of the 1968 Columbia demonstrations at the college radio station, WKCR-FM.

Siegel is married to Jane Siegel, who works for the United States Department of Commerce; they are the parents of two daughters, Erica Anne Siegel and musician Leah Siegel.

Famous quotes containing the words personal and/or life:

I want relations which are not purely personal, based on purely personal qualities; but relations based upon some unanimous accord in truth or belief, and a harmony of purpose, rather than of personality. I am weary of personality.... Let us be easy and impersonal, not forever fingering over our own souls, and the souls of our acquaintances, but trying to create a new life, a new common life, a new complete tree of life from the roots that are within us.
    —D.H. (David Herbert)

The work of art, just like any fragment of human life considered in its deepest meaning, seems to me devoid of value if it does not offer the hardness, the rigidity, the regularity, the luster on every interior and exterior facet, of the crystal.
    André Breton (1896–1966)
