Robert Ritter Von Greim - Death

Death

On 8 May, the same day as the surrender of the Third Reich, Ritter von Greim was captured by American soldiers in Austria. Ritter von Greim was slated to be part of a Soviet-American prisoner exchange program and, fearing torture and execution at the hands of Joseph Stalin's NKVD, committed suicide in Salzburg, Austria, on 24 May. His final words before taking Potassium cyanide were: "I am the head of the Luftwaffe, but I have no Luftwaffe."

Famous quotes containing the word death:

    Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not regard equality with God as something to be exploited, but emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, being born in human likeness. And being found in human form, he humbled himself and became obedient to the point of death M even death on a cross.
    Bible: New Testament, Philippians 2:5-8.

    O mortal folk, you may behold and see
    How I lie here, sometime a mighty knight;
    The end of joy and all prosperity
    Is death at last, thorough his course and might;
    Stephen Hawes (1474–1528)

    It is not love you will find:
    You have no limbs
    Crying for stillness, you have no mind
    Trembling with seraphim,
    You have no death to come.
    Philip Larkin (1922–1986)
