Jangli Maharaj Road (J. M. Road)

Jangli (also spelled Jangali) Maharaj Road, better known as J.M. Road, is named after Sadguru Jangali Maharaj who’s "Math" or Ashram lies on this road. It is one of the better maintained roads in Pune. It starts from the Sancheti Hospital Intersection at Shivajinagar opposite to the COEP Hostel and heads straight up to Deccan Gymkhana where it ends at the Garware Bridge.

J. M. Road may be thought of as a showcase of Pune's economic progress with a large number of international consumer brands having their outlets and showrooms on this road. It has one of India's first Pizza Hut outlets, along with a large number of fast food joints and coffee shops. J. M. Road is now a new destination for Rajdhani Thalis too. A new and unusual food court too has opened up called "Palette, The Food Court", serving range of cuisines. The area is popular amongst students from local colleges for decades.

A large public garden called Sambhaji Park occupies a large section on one side of the road. This garden was built and designed under the supervision of M.D.Dalvi Chief Officer and City Engineer Poona City Municipality. The Bal Gandharva Rangamandir (Bal Gandharva Auditorium) stands at the corner of Sambhaji Park and J. M. Road. A statue of Rani Laxmibai of Jhansi in front of Bal Gandharva Rangamandir is a landmark on this road. Famous for its many restaurants, J. M. Road is one of the busiest places in Pune. Jangli Maharaj Road is not only the first 80 feet road but also the first tar road in the city of Pune. It was built under the supervision of M.D.Dalvi.BA, AMIES ( GLASGOW) Chief Officer of Poona City Municipality between 1939-1944.His quaint English bungalow still stands to date on Jangli Maharaj road which he built in 1939.Few people know that the leading industrialist Abasaheb Garware lived in a rented house of Mr Kudale on Jangli Maharaj road which still stands in its grand opulance to date right next to Meghdoot Lodge.Mr Garware used to visit Chief Officer M.D.Dalvi's bungalow to make telephone calls. Near the Shivajinagar end of the road is a shrine built in honour of Jangli Maharaj, a local Hindu saint who passed away in 1890. Adjacent to the shrine is the Pataleshwar temple entirely carved in rock which probably was constructed more than 1300 years ago.
