Environmental Issues
Although RIU Hotels is said to be an environmental friendly enterprise, there are people that consider that all that stuff is not more than greenwashing practices.
At least one of the RIU new resorts, the one that is being built in Costa Rica (RIU Guanacaste resort) has been placed near the beach by clearing forestal zones (which is forbidden in Costa Rica). According to Confraternidad Guanacasteca, which works to save the natural environment of the hotel and the sustaintability of the people living there, hotel Riu deliberately cleared an area of Mangrove, filled the area with dirt and then disguised the top layer with sand as to show that the mangrove never existed. The same have been done with Quebrada Huesera, a ravine that have been filled to bury sanitantion infrastructures for the resort. At the moment this issue is under investigation of the Minaet, which stands for Environment, Energy and Telecommunications Ministry.

Famous quotes containing the word issues:
“How to attain sufficient clarity of thought to meet the terrifying issues now facing us, before it is too late, is ... important. Of one thing I feel reasonably sure: we cant stop to discuss whether the table has or hasnt legs when the house is burning down over our heads. Nor do the classics per se seem to furnish the kind of education which fits people to cope with a fast-changing civilization.”
—Mary Barnett Gilson (1877?)
