The original vinyl release had a gate fold sleeve, although later budget reissues on Polydor reduced to a single sleeve. The album's songs have been performed by subsequent Rainbow lineups.
David Kent-Abbott of AllMusic writes Although Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow provides a few listenable tracks, its primary value is historical. Look to Rainbow's next album, Rainbow Rising (1976), to grasp the heavy metal potential that is only hinted at here.
Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow was re-issued on CD in remastered form in the U.S. in April 1999. The European release followed later in the year.
Vocalist Ronnie James Dio considered this release his favourite Rainbow album.

Famous quotes containing the words release and/or reception:
“The near touch of death may be a release into life; if only it will break the egoistic will, and release that other flow.”
—D.H. (David Herbert)
“Satire is a sort of glass, wherein beholders do generally discover everybodys face but their own; which is the chief reason for that kind of reception it meets in the world, and that so very few are offended with it.”
—Jonathan Swift (16671745)
