Human Interaction
Risso's dolphins generally do not approach boats, but occasionally surf bow waves. A remarkable exception was an individual named Pelorus Jack who accompanied boats in Admiralty Bay in New Zealand's Marlborough Sounds for more than 20 years. Hunting of this species has never been particularly widespread though complete pods are often netted and killed in Taiji, Japan. However, the species is recognised as abundant and safe.
Risso's have successfully been taken into captivity in the United States and Japan, although not with the regularity of bottlenose dolphins or orca. Hybrid Risso's-bottlenose dolphins have been bred in captivity.
Under the name "grampus", it was one of the royal fish which were traditionally the property of the English Crown.

Famous quotes containing the words human and/or interaction:
“It is visible then that it was not any Heathen Religion or other Idolatrous Superstition, that first put Man upon crossing his Appetites and subduing his dearest Inclinations, but the skilful Management of wary Politicians; and the nearer we search into human Nature, the more we shall be convinced, that the Moral Virtues are the Political Offspring which Flattery begot upon Pride.”
—Bernard De Mandeville (16701733)
“Our rural village life was a purifying, uplifting influence that fortified us against the later impacts of urbanization; Church and State, because they were separated and friendly, had spiritual and ethical standards that were mutually enriching; freedom and discipline, individualism and collectivity, nature and nurture in their interaction promised an ever stronger democracy. I have no illusions that those simpler, happier days can be resurrected.”
—Agnes E. Meyer (18871970)
