Sir Richard is chairman of the think-tank Reform. He is a trustee of the Natural History Museum (London) and the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew.

In September 2008, he was appointed Chair of NHS London, but resigned in May 2010 over the incoming government's decision to halt planned hospital reorganisations in London.

He is a member of the Advisory Council for the Campaign for Science and Engineering.
