Biography
Speer is the author of the 2005 biography of Outsider artist Matt Lamb, Matt Lamb: The Art of Success, published by John Wiley & Sons.
Speer's essays, art reviews, and feature articles have appeared in Newsweek, Salon, ARTnews, Art Ltd., Opera News, and The Los Angeles Times. Since 2002 Speer has been visual arts critic at Willamette Week, a Portland, Oregon alternative weekly newspaper that won the Pulitzer Prize for Investigative Reporting in 2005. His feature reports have earned four first-place awards and two second-place awards from The Associated Press and a first-place award from The Society of Professional Journalists.
Before transitioning to print journalism in 2000 he worked as a news writer, editor, and producer for WESH-TV (Orlando), WHLT-TV (Hattiesburg, Mississippi), WJTV (Jackson, Mississippi), and KFSM-TV (Fort Smith/Fayetteville, Arkansas). He enjoys weightlifting, power walking, midget tossing, and supports the arts.
