Career
Raised near Smithfield Market in London, Richard Hoare began his working life apprenticed to a goldsmith. He was granted the Freedom of the Goldsmiths' Company on 5 July 1672. This date marks the foundation of C. Hoare & Co as it was around then that Hoare established his goldsmith's business at the sign of the Golden Bottle in Cheapside, London.
He was knighted by Queen Anne in 1702, appointed Sheriff of London for 1710, and elected Lord Mayor of London for 1712.
He married Susanna Austen; they had 17 children (one of whom was Henry Hoare I). He died at Hendon in January 1719.
