Population
As seen in the table, Retamal population has witnessed a steady growth and continued until the middle of 20th century which is when population reaches its ceiling. From 1950 emigration has plagued this county with the intensity that has been, until 1981, almost 70 to 100 of the population effective.
However, in the last five years some population has recovered as a result of a slight return process. Emigration has caused a profound aging in this population and, therefore increased mortality and a falling birth rate. Naturally, all result is a negative natural growth in recent years.

Famous quotes containing the word population:
“This was the Eastham famous of late years for its camp- meetings, held in a grove near by, to which thousands flock from all parts of the Bay. We conjectured that the reason for the perhaps unusual, if not unhealthful development of the religious sentiment here, was the fact that a large portion of the population are women whose husbands and sons are either abroad on the sea, or else drowned, and there is nobody but they and the ministers left behind.”
—Henry David Thoreau (18171862)
“In our large cities, the population is godless, materialized,no bond, no fellow-feeling, no enthusiasm. These are not men, but hungers, thirsts, fevers, and appetites walking. How is it people manage to live on,so aimless as they are? After their peppercorn aims are gained, it seems as if the lime in their bones alone held them together, and not any worthy purpose.”
—Ralph Waldo Emerson (18031882)
“The most advanced nations are always those who navigate the most. The power which the sea requires in the sailor makes a man of him very fast, and the change of shores and population clears his head of much nonsense of his wigwam.”
—Ralph Waldo Emerson (18031882)
