Respiratory Distress Syndrome

There are two forms of respiratory distress syndrome:

  • ARDS, which is acute (or adult) respiratory distress syndrome
  • Infant respiratory distress syndrome (RDS), which is a complication of premature birth, also known as hyaline membrane disease (HMD)

Also, respiratory distress can mean:

  • Shortness of breath
  • Respiratory failure

Famous quotes containing the words distress and/or syndrome:

All great movements are popular movements. They are the volcanic eruptions of human passions and emotions, stirred into activity by the ruthless Goddess of Distress or by the torch of the spoken word cast into the midst of the people.
    Adolf Hitler (1889–1945)

Women are taught that their main goal in life is to serve others—first men, and later, children. This prescription leads to enormous problems, for it is supposed to be carried out as if women did not have needs of their own, as if one could serve others without simultaneously attending to one’s own interests and desires. Carried to its “perfection,” it produces the martyr syndrome or the smothering wife and mother.
    Jean Baker Miller (20th century)
