Sequence of Steps
In 2004, Goldsmith suggested a "problem pyramid" of "six steps which must be performed in sequence":
- Identify the real problem, opportunity or challenge
- Identify the current measure(s) which show that the problem is real
- Identify the goal measure(s) to show the problem has been addressed and the value of meeting it
- Identify the "as-is" cause(s) of the problem, as it is the causes that must be solved, not the problem directly
- Define the business "whats" that must be delivered to meet the goal measure(s)
- Specify a product design how to satisfy the real business requirements
However Goldsmith notes that identifying the real problem "is exceedingly difficult".

Famous quotes containing the words sequence and/or steps:
“Reminiscences, even extensive ones, do not always amount to an autobiography.... For autobiography has to do with time, with sequence and what makes up the continuous flow of life. Here, I am talking of a space, of moments and discontinuities. For even if months and years appear here, it is in the form they have in the moment of recollection. This strange formit may be called fleeting or eternalis in neither case the stuff that life is made of.”
—Walter Benjamin (18921940)
“What had really caused the womens movement was the additional years of human life. At the turn of the century womens life expectancy was forty-six; now it was nearly eighty. Our groping sense that we couldnt live all those years in terms of motherhood alone was the problem that had no name. Realizing that it was not some freakish personal fault but our common problem as women had enabled us to take the first steps to change our lives.”
—Betty Friedan (20th century)
