Republic of The Rio Grande - Rebellion

Rebellion

On January 17, 1840 a meeting was held at the Oreveña Ranch near Laredo. A group of notables from the states of Coahuila, Nuevo León, and Tamaulipas advocated a rebellion seeking secession from Mexico and formation of their own federal republic with Laredo as the capital. However, those states' own congresses and governments never took any action to support the insurgents, and requested the help of the Central government in Mexico City to aid the local state armies.

The insurgents designated their own officials. They were:

  • Jesús de Cárdenas, president.
  • Antonio Canales, commander-in-chief of the army.
  • Juan Nepomuceno Molano, council representative for Tamaulipas.
  • Francisco Vidaurri y Villaseñor, council representative for Coahuila.
  • Manuel María de Llano, council representative for Nuevo León.
  • José María Jesús Carbajal, council secretary.

After the meeting, the insurgents temporarily moved to Guerrero, Tamaulipas, for security reasons. After the Battle of Morales in March 1840, the government moved to Victoria inside the Republic of Texas, where it remained until the rebellion collapsed later that year.

Famous quotes containing the word rebellion:

The one point on which all women are in furious secret rebellion against the existing law is the saddling of the right to a child with the obligation to become the servant of a man.
    George Bernard Shaw (1856–1950)

The rebellion is against time pollution, the feeling that the essence of what makes life worth living—the small moments, the special family getaways, the cookies in the oven, the weekend drives, the long dreamlike summers Mso much of this has been taken from us, or we have given it up. For what? Hitachi stereos? Club Med? Company cars? Racquetball? For fifteen-hour days and lousy day care?
    Richard Louv (20th century)

O make me a mask and a wall to shut from your spies
Of the sharp, enamelled eyes and the spectacled claws
Rape and rebellion in the nurseries of my face....
    Dylan Thomas (1914–1953)
