Anime News Network stated in its review of the series' first DVD that "Renton is a pretty normal male lead for a series like this." However, while initially describing him as immature, the site said in its review of the seventh DVD that "Renton proves that he has grown up a bit by not being thrown for a loop by learning what makes Eureka special."
