Renfrewshire Cup - History

History

The Renfrewshire Cup is the third oldest football trophy in Scotland still competed for. Only the Scottish Cup and East of Scotland Shield are older and still contested.

1991 was the last year in which Morton or St Mirren lost to other opposition. On this occasion amateurs Bellaire stunned St Mirren at Love St with a one - nil victory. Their joy was short lived, however, when Morton defeated them in the final.

The first tournament was held in 1879 and won by Thornliebank. In 1953/54 Babcock and Wilcox were the only team outwith the big two to win it since Port Glasgow were triumphant in 1909.

Famous quotes containing the word history:

History does nothing; it does not possess immense riches, it does not fight battles. It is men, real, living, who do all this.... It is not “history” which uses men as a means of achieving—as if it were an individual person—its own ends. History is nothing but the activity of men in pursuit of their ends.
    Karl Marx (1818–1883)

It takes a great deal of history to produce a little literature.
    Henry James (1843–1916)

    I saw the Arab map.
It resembled a mare shuffling on,
    dragging its history like saddlebags,
nearing its tomb and the pitch of hell.
Adonis [Ali Ahmed Said] (b. 1930)
