Criticism and Controversy
The Legion of Christ and Regnum Christi have received criticism both from members within the Catholic Church and without.
On May 1, 2010 the Vatican issued a statement condemning Maciel as "immoral" and acknowledging that Maciel had committed "true crimes." Pope Benedict also said he would appoint a delegate to reform the Legionaries’ charism, spirituality and constitutions. On July 9, 2010, Archbishop Velasio De Paolis was appointed as the papal delegate. He was also given power to open a visitation of its lay affiliate Regnum Christi, ended in June 2011 with the need for a similar reform.

“And therefore, as when there is a controversy in an account, the parties must by their own accord, set up for right Reason, the Reason of some Arbitrator, or Judge, to whose sentence, they will both stand, or their controversy must either come to blows, or be undecided, for want of a right Reason constituted by Nature; so is it also in all debates of what kind soever.”
—Thomas Hobbes (15791688)
