Particular signs and symptoms may indicate that the underlying cause is serious and requires immediate attention and, consequently, the examiner conducting the eye examination should be alerted by their presence.
Six such signs include: conjunctival injection, ciliary flush (circumcorneal injection), corneal edema or opacities, corneal staining, abnormal pupil size, and abnormal intraocular pressure.

Famous quotes containing the word approach:
“Girls tend to attribute their failures to factors such as lack of ability, while boys tend to attribute failure to specific factors, including teachers attitudes. Moreover, girls avoid situations in which failure is likely, whereas boys approach such situations as a challenge, indicating that failure differentially affects self-esteem.”
—Michael Lewis (late20th-century)
