The Baltimore Free School
In September 2009, classes began at 1323 N. Calvert St., in Baltimore, MD, at the Baltimore Free School. Subjects have included "History of the Middle East", "Small Passive Solar Design", "To Be Tobacco-Free", "Revolutionary Hip Hop", "Terror, Genocide and Human Rights in the 20th Century" and "Stich n Bitch". The classes are taught along the principles of "horizontal organizing, collaborative learning and participatory education", and it's guaranteed that the teachers are not "y'know, fascists". The Free School is volunteer run and any person is invited to teach a class or series of classes with no certification required.

Famous quotes containing the words baltimore, free and/or school:
“The treatment of the incident of the assault upon the sailors of the Baltimore is so conciliatory and friendly that I am of the opinion that there is a good prospect that the differences growing out of that serious affair can now be adjusted upon terms satisfactory to this Government by the usual methods and without special powers from Congress.”
—Benjamin Harrison (18331901)
“The bad thing is that thinking about thought doesnt help at all; one has to have it from nature so that the good ideas appear before us like free children of God calling to us: Here we are.”
—Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe (17491832)
“Dissonance between family and school, therefore, is not only inevitable in a changing society; it also helps to make children more malleable and responsive to a changing world. By the same token, one could say that absolute homogeneity between family and school would reflect a static, authoritarian society and discourage creative, adaptive development in children.”
—Sara Lawrence Lightfoot (20th century)
