Species of Red Algae
Around 6,500 to 10,000 species are known, nearly all of which are marine, with about 200 that only live in fresh water. However, estimates of the number of real species vary by 100%.
Some examples of species and genera of red algae are:
- Cyanidioschyzon merolae, a primitive red algae
- Atractophora hypnoides
- Gelidiella calcicola
- Lemanea, a freshwater genus
- Palmaria palmata, dulse
- Schmitzia hiscockiana
- Chondrus crispus, Irish moss
- Mastocarpus stellatus
- Vanvoorstia bennettiana, became extinct in the early 20th century
- Acrochaetium efflorescens

Famous quotes containing the words species of, species, red and/or algae:
“Prohibition will work great injury to the cause of temperance. It is a species of intemperance within itself, for it goes beyond the bounds of reason in that it attempts to control a mans appetite by legislation, and makes a crime out of things that are not crimes. A Prohibition law strikes a blow at the very principles upon which our government was founded.”
—Abraham Lincoln (18091865)
“A man, to be greatly good, must imagine intensely and comprehensively; he must put himself in the place of another and of many others; the pains and pleasures of his species must become his own.”
—Percy Bysshe Shelley (17921822)
“To-night the winds begin to rise
And roar from yonder dropping day:
The last red leaf is whirld away,
The rooks are blown about the skies;
The forest crackd, the waters curld,
The cattle huddled on the lea;”
—Alfred Tennyson (18091892)
“there, where you live,
live:
start over,
everyman, with
the algae of your dreams.”
—Denise Levertov (b. 1923)
