Human Consumption
Several species are used as food. Dulse (Palmaria palmata) and Porphyra are the best known in the British Isles.
In East and Southeast Asia, agar is most commonly produced from Gelidium amansii. In Asia, rhodophytes are important sources of food, such as nori. The high vitamin and protein content of this food makes it attractive, as does the relative simplicity of cultivation, which began in Japan more than 300 years ago.

Famous quotes containing the words human and/or consumption:
“War seems to be one of the most salutary phenomena for the culture of human nature; and it is not without regret that I see it disappearing more and more from the scene.”
—Karl Wilhelm Von Humboldt (17671835)
“There is held to be no surer test of civilisation than the increase per head of the consumption of alcohol and tobacco. Yet alcohol and tobacco are recognisable poisons, so that their consumption has only to be carried far enough to destroy civilisation altogether.”
—Havelock Ellis (18591939)
