Raul Julia-Levy - Animal Rights Activism

Animal Rights Activism

In 2009, Julia-Levy launched an animal rights campaign to identify animal-related health issues and allow celebrities to showcase their own pets, utilizing a public platform.

Julia-Levy's initiative expanded to include the plight of Lolita (orca), an Orca whale that has been living and performing at Seaquarium in Miami, Florida, since her capture from her home waters off the coast of Washington State on 8 August 1970. The animal is reportedly the oldest Orca whale currently in captivity.

Some of the celebrities who have joined Julia-Levy's goal to return Lolita to Puget Sound include actors Wesley Snipes, Johnny Depp, Corey Feldman, Lindsay Lohan, Harrison Ford; film director Cameron Crowe, film director and former child actor Ron Howard; recording artists Elton John and 50 Cent, in addition to humanitarian Plácido Domingo.

"He who deeply cares for others, especially for those who can't speak for themselves, will have a better life and bring to himself good karma," Julia-Levy said to journalist Sharon Raiford Bush in an interview for Exceptional People Magazine regarding his efforts to save animal species from harm and possible extermination.

Famous quotes containing the words animal and/or rights:

Labor came to humanity with the fall from grace and was at best a penitential sacrifice enabling purity through humiliation. Labor was toil, distress, trouble, fatigue—an exertion both painful and compulsory. Labor was our animal condition, struggling to survive in dirt and darkness.
    Shoshana Zuboff (b. 1951)

The importance of a lost romantic vision should not be underestimated. In such a vision is power as well as joy. In it is meaning. Life is flat, barren, zestless, if one can find one’s lost vision nowhere.
Sarah Patton Boyle, U.S. civil rights activist and author. The Desegregated Heart, part 1, ch. 19 (1962)
