Rattlesnake Island (Lake Erie)

Rattlesnake Island is an 85-acre (34 ha) island located on Lake Erie near Put-In-Bay, 11 miles (18 km) northeast of Port Clinton, Ohio. It is one of several islands known as the Lake Erie Islands. The name Rattlesnake comes both from the actual Rattlesnakes that used to inhabit the island, as well as from the overall shape of the island (two small islets near the tip resemble a rattlesnake's rattle).

Famous quotes containing the words rattlesnake and/or island:

When you see a rattlesnake poised to strike, you do not wait until he has struck to crush him.
    Franklin D. Roosevelt (1882–1945)

I should like to have seen a gallery of coronation beauties, at Westminster Abbey, confronted for a moment by this band of Island girls; their stiffness, formality, and affectation contrasted with the artless vivacity and unconcealed natural graces of these savage maidens. It would be the Venus de’ Medici placed beside a milliner’s doll.
    Herman Melville (1819–1891)
