Use As A Building Material

Rapakivi is the material used in Ă…land's Middle Age stone churches.

Modern building uses of rapakivi granites are in polished slabs used for covering the buildings, floors, counter tops or pavements. As a building material, rapakivi granite is also known as "Baltic Brown".

In 1770 a rapakivi monolith boulder, the "Thunder Stone", was used as the pedestal for the Bronze Horseman statue in Saint Petersburg, Russia. Weighing 1,250 tonnes, this boulder is claimed to be the largest stone ever moved by humans.

Famous quotes containing the words building and/or material:

For we know that if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.
Bible: New Testament, 2 Corinthians 5:1.

Man’s characteristic privilege is that the bond he accepts is not physical but moral; that is, social. He is governed not by a material environment brutally imposed on him, but by a conscience superior to his own, the superiority of which he feels. Because the greater, better part of his existence transcends the body, he escapes the body’s yoke, but is subject to that of society.
    Emile Durkheim (1858–1917)
