World War I
In April 1917, the United States entered World War I and shortly afterwards, Scott, then 19 years old, joined the Army. He served in France as an artillery observer with the 2nd Trench Mortar Battalion, 19th Field Artillery.
Scott's wartime experience would give him training that would be put to use in his later film career, including the use of firearms and horsemanship.

Famous quotes containing the words world and/or war:
“Science in the modern world has many uses; its chief use, however, is to provide long words to cover the errors of the rich.”
—Gilbert Keith Chesterton (18741936)
“There is something to be said for government by a great aristocracy which has furnished leaders to the nation in peace and war for generations; even a Democrat like myself must admit this. But there is absolutely nothing to be said for government by a plutocracy, for government by men very powerful in certain lines and gifted with the money touch, but with ideals which in their essence are merely those of so many glorified pawnbrokers.”
—Theodore Roosevelt (18581919)
