Controversy Surrounding Salmaan Taseer's Unannounced Visit To Dubai

On December 9, 2010, in a Punjab Assembly session, soon after the recitation from the holy Quran, MMA parliamentary leader Ali Haider Noor Niazi said on a point of order that the Punjab governor was missing since the last 24 hours and no one knew his whereabouts, so according to the constitution, PA Speaker Rana Iqbal automatically became the governor in his absence under the 18th Amendment. Meanwhile, reports of Salman Taseer's secret foreign visit without handing over the charge to Rana Iqbal triggered a heated debate in the House. It was said that since the governor was in Dubai, Speaker Rana Iqbal Ahmed Khan could not chair the session as a consequence of the constitutional role assigned to him in such a situation.

Famous quotes containing the words controversy, surrounding, unannounced and/or visit:

And therefore, as when there is a controversy in an account, the parties must by their own accord, set up for right Reason, the Reason of some Arbitrator, or Judge, to whose sentence, they will both stand, or their controversy must either come to blows, or be undecided, for want of a right Reason constituted by Nature; so is it also in all debates of what kind soever.
    Thomas Hobbes (1579–1688)

There are no such oysters, terrapin, or canvas-back ducks as there were in those days; the race is extinct. It is strange how things degenerate.... I passed, the other day, the deserted house of Mrs. Gerry, which I used to think so lordly. It stands alone now amid the surrounding sky-scrapers, and reminds me of Don Quixote going out to fight the windmills. It should always remain to mark the difference between the past and the present.
    M. E. W. Sherwood (1826–1903)

We are well advised to keep on nodding terms with the people we used to be, whether we find them attractive company or not. Otherwise they turn up unannounced and surprise us, come hammering on the mind’s door at 4am of a bad night and demand to know who deserted them, who betrayed them, who is going to make amends. We forget all too soon the things we thought we could never forget.
    Joan Didion (b. 1934)

Nowhere is one more alone than in Paris ... and yet surrounded by crowds. Nowhere is one more likely to incur greater ridicule. And no visit is more essential.
    Marguerite Duras (b. 1914)
