Ram Jethmalani - Early Life

Early Life

Ram Jethmalani was born in Shikharpur in Sindh, British India, now in Pakistan. He got a double promotion in school and completed matriculation at the age of 13. He secured an LLB degree at the young age of 17. At that time, the minimum age for becoming a lawyer was 21, but a special resolution allowed him to become a lawyer at 18.

Ram Jethmalani was married at an age of little above 18, to Durga, in a traditional Indian arranged marriage. In 1947, just before partition, he also married Ratna Shehani, a lawyer by profession. Polygamy was permissible for Hindu men in India until 1956 and therefore both his marriages are equally valid. His family today includes both wives and four children — three by Durga (Rani, Shobha, Mahesh) and one by Ratna (Janak).

Famous quotes containing the words early and/or life:

Names on a list, whose faces I do not recall
But they are gone to early death, who late in school
Distinguished the belt feed lever from the belt holding pawl.
    Richard Eberhart (b. 1904)

There is no calm philosophy of life here, such as you might put at the end of the Almanac, to hang over the farmer’s hearth,—how men shall live in these winter, in these summer days. No philosophy, properly speaking, of love, or friendship, or religion, or politics, or education, or nature, or spirit; perhaps a nearer approach to a philosophy of kingship, and of the place of the literary man, than of anything else.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)
