Railway Coupling - Accidents

Accidents

Different kinds of coupling have different accident rates.

  • UK 1906 - twelve fatal and 523 non-fatal accidents
  • The Murulla rail accident of 1926 involved the breakage of a "drawhook" leading to a runaway and then a collision. Drawhooks imply "buffers and screw" couplings.
  • Round Oak - 1858 - coupling broke and rear of train rolled back.

Famous quotes containing the word accidents:

The day-laborer is reckoned as standing at the foot of the social scale, yet he is saturated with the laws of the world. His measures are the hours; morning and night, solstice and equinox, geometry, astronomy, and all the lovely accidents of nature play through his mind.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)
