Radiation Chemistry - Reduction of Metal Compounds

Reduction of Metal Compounds

In addition to the reduction of organic compounds by the solvated electrons it has been reported that upon irradiation a pertechnetate solution, at pH 4.1 is converted to a colloid of technetium dioxide. Irradiation of a solution at pH 1.8 soluble Tc(IV) complexes are formed. Irradiation of a solution at 2.7 forms a mixture of the colloid and the soluble Tc(IV) compounds. Gamma irradiation has been used in the synthesis of nanoparticles of gold on iron oxide (Fe2O3).

It has been shown that the irradiation of aqueous solutions of lead compounds leads to the formation of elemental lead, when an inorganic solid such as bentonite and sodium formate are present then the lead is removed from the aqueous solution.

Famous quotes containing the words reduction of, reduction, metal and/or compounds:

The reduction of nuclear arsenals and the removal of the threat of worldwide nuclear destruction is a measure, in my judgment, of the power and strength of a great nation.
Jimmy Carter (James Earl Carter, Jr.)

Jimmy Carter (James Earl Carter, Jr.)

And, indeed, is there not something holy about a great kitchen?... The scoured gleam of row upon row of metal vessels dangling from hooks or reposing on their shelves till needed with the air of so many chalices waiting for the celebration of the sacrament of food. And the range like an altar, yes, before which my mother bowed in perpetual homage, a fringe of sweat upon her upper lip and the fire glowing in her cheeks.
    Angela Carter (1940–1992)

We can come up with a working definition of life, which is what we did for the Viking mission to Mars. We said we could think in terms of a large molecule made up of carbon compounds that can replicate, or make copies of itself, and metabolize food and energy. So that’s the thought: macrocolecule, metabolism, replication.
    Cyril Ponnamperuma (b. 1923)
