Racism In Sport

Racism in sports occurs in both team and individual sports around the world. It has led to a wide range of controversial incidents which have been reported in the media. The sport itself does not induce racism. The people that participate in the playing, organization, and implementation of sports bring racism into sports. Some nations, such as the United Kingdom, have used sports in order to battle the overarching racism in its society. Sport is meant to be a colorblind activity that adheres to the notion of fair play.

The Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission (HREOC) released a report claiming that racial abuse and vilification is commonplace in Australian sport.

Famous quotes containing the words racism and/or sport:

I don’t think America’s the center of the world anymore. I think African women will lead the way [in] ... women’s liberation ... The African woman, she’s got a country, she’s got the flag, she’s got her own army, got the navy. She doesn’t have a racism problem. She’s not afraid that if she speaks up, her man will say goodbye to her.
    Faith Ringgold (b. 1934)

Rabelais, for instance, is intolerable; one chapter is better than a volume,—it may be sport to him, but it is death to us. A mere humorist, indeed, is a most unhappy man; and his readers are most unhappy also.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)
