Plot Introduction
Mavra Chang has been trapped on the Well World for twenty two years, mutated into a grotesque mockery of her previous identity. The attempt to recover her ship has failed, and the second ship that crashed on the Well World came down in the inaccessible (and inhospitable) Northern Hemisphere. When a possible method of traveling to the Northern Hemisphere is discovered, it ignites a new race between Mavra and her allies on one side, and her enemies on the other. The winner will gain control of the orbiting supercomputer Obie, with the power to manipulate the very fabric of the universe.

Famous quotes containing the words plot and/or introduction:
“We have defined a story as a narrative of events arranged in their time-sequence. A plot is also a narrative of events, the emphasis falling on causality. The king died and then the queen died is a story. The king died, and then the queen died of grief is a plot. The time sequence is preserved, but the sense of causality overshadows it.”
—E.M. (Edward Morgan)
“Such is oftenest the young mans introduction to the forest, and the most original part of himself. He goes thither at first as a hunter and fisher, until at last, if he has the seeds of a better life in him, he distinguishes his proper objects, as a poet or naturalist it may be, and leaves the gun and fish-pole behind. The mass of men are still and always young in this respect.”
—Henry David Thoreau (18171862)
