History
Queluz is mainly known for the 18th-century Royal Palace, one of the most representative of the rococo buildings in Europe.
On 24 July 1997, the urbanized corridors of the parish (effectively the town of Queluz) were elevated to the status of city (Portuguese: cidade). The civil parishes of Massamá and Monte Abrão were also de-annexed from the parish of Queluz, becoming their own administrative authorities.

Famous quotes containing the word history:
“... the history of the race, from infancy through its stages of barbarism, heathenism, civilization, and Christianity, is a process of suffering, as the lower principles of humanity are gradually subjected to the higher.”
—Catherine E. Beecher (18001878)
“To summarize the contentions of this paper then. Firstly, the phrase the meaning of a word is a spurious phrase. Secondly and consequently, a re-examination is needed of phrases like the two which I discuss, being a part of the meaning of and having the same meaning. On these matters, dogmatists require prodding: although history indeed suggests that it may sometimes be better to let sleeping dogmatists lie.”
—J.L. (John Langshaw)
“The history of reform is always identical; it is the comparison of the idea with the fact. Our modes of living are not agreeable to our imagination. We suspect they are unworthy. We arraign our daily employments.”
—Ralph Waldo Emerson (18031882)
