Queensland Fire and Rescue Service

The Queensland Fire and Rescue Service (QFRS) is the primary provider of fire suppression and life rescue services to the residents and visitors to the state of Queensland, Australia. Its headquarters are located in Kedron, Brisbane.

The QFRS has a diverse workforce including approximately 2,100 full-time fire officers, another 2,100 auxiliary (retained) fire officers and around 34,000 volunteers that cover the state. The operational fire officers are supported by 750 salaried public service employees. Reference is still made in some parts to the Rural Fire Service or RFS which ceased to exist as a separate entity when the Fire and Rescue Service Act 1990 was introduced, some members of staff and volunteers will still identify with the RFS and proclaim independence.

The Minister responsible for the Queensland Fire and Rescue Service is the Honourable Jack Dempsey, Minister for Police and Community Safety. The QFRS is an agency within the Department of Community Safety, of which the Director General (and QFRS CEO) is Kelvin Anderson.

Famous quotes containing the words fire, rescue and/or service:

A young person is a person with nothing to learn
One who already knows that ice does not chill and fire does not burn . . .
It knows it can spend six hours in the sun on its first
day at the beach without ending up a skinless beet,
And it knows it can walk barefoot through the barn
without running a nail in its feet. . . .
    Meanwhile psychologists grow rich
Writing that the young are ones’ should not
    undermine the self-confidence of which.
    Ogden Nash (1902–1971)

We live in a time which has created the art of the absurd. It is our art. It contains happenings, Pop art, camp, a theater of the absurd.... Do we have the art because the absurd is the patina of waste...? Or are we face to face with a desperate or most rational effort from the deepest resources of the unconscious of us all to rescue civilization from the pit and plague of its bedding?
    Norman Mailer (b. 1923)

We too are ashes as we watch and hear
The psalm, the sorrow, and the simple praise
Of one whose promised thoughts of other days
Were such as ours, but now wholly destroyed,
The service record of his youth wiped out,
His dream dispersed by shot, must disappear.
    Karl Shapiro (b. 1913)
