A-440 was built over the following timeline:
- From A-13 to Route 117 ... 1975
- From Route 117 to A-15 ... 1974
- From A-15 to Route 335 (exit 25) ... 1975
- From Route 335 to A-19 (exits 25 to 27) ... 1976
- From A-19 to A-25 South (exits 27 to 34) ... 1979
Note: Only service roads were originally built from A-13 to Boulevard Industriel (Exit 24), but they were signed as Autoroute 440 until the autoroute was completed in 1994.
