Summer Student Research Program
Based on a model at the University of Notre Dame, QuarkNet has offered a summer student research program since 2004. Teams of four high school students supervised by one teacher spend six weeks involved in various physics research projects. The research is associated with ATLAS and CMS, CDF and DØ, the International Linear Collider R&D, cosmic ray muon detectors, optical fiber R&D and more. Teams are supported at up to 25 centers each summer. Examples of recent research titles include: Search and Identification of Comparing the Amount of Muon Events to Daily Weather Changes, Cosmic Ray Signals in Radar Echo, Fibers for Forward Calorimeter, The Effects of Impurities on Radio Signal Detection in Ice, Quartz Plate Calorimetery, Galactic Asymmetry of the Milky Way and RF Magnet Design, and Weak Lensing Mass Estimates of the Elliot Arc Cluster.

Famous quotes containing the words summer, student, research and/or program:
“Does he lie there
forever, where his rifle waits, giant
and straight? . . . I think you die again
and live again,
Johnny, each summer that moves inside
my mind.”
—Anne Sexton (19281974)
“Solitude is not measured by the miles of space that intervene between a man and his fellows. The really diligent student in one of the crowded hives of Cambridge College is as solitary as a dervis in the desert.”
—Henry David Thoreau (18171862)
“Feeling that you have to be the perfect parent places a tremendous and completely unnecessary burden on you. If weve learned anything from the past half-centurys research on child development, its that children are remarkably resilient. You can make lots of mistakes and still wind up with great kids.”
—Lawrence Kutner (20th century)
“In the Corner Store, near the village center, hangs a large sign reading: After 40 years of credit business, we have closed our book of Sorrow.”
—For the State of Maine, U.S. public relief program (1935-1943)
