Q Theatre - Opening Night

Opening Night

The new enterprise was originally advertised as "A Bright, Cosy Theatre for the presentation of successful WEST END PLAYS." Opening night was scheduled for September 1924, but the doors finally opened to the public on Boxing Day 26 December 1924 with a production of Gertrude Jenning's The Young Person in Pink. But the occasion was marred by the over-selling of tickets, resulting in a number of disappointed and angry ticket-holders.

Famous quotes containing the words opening and/or night:

The Heavens. Once an object of superstition, awe and fear. Now a vast region for growing knowledge. The distance of Venus, the atmosphere of Mars, the size of Jupiter, and the speed of Mercury. All this and more we know. But their greatest mystery the heavens have kept a secret. What sort of life, if any, inhabits these other planets? Human life, like ours? Or life extremely lower in the scale. Or dangerously higher.
Richard Blake, and William Cameron Menzies. Narrator, Invaders from Mars, at the opening of the movie (1953)

The night is a skin pulled over the head of day that the day may be in torment.
    Djuna Barnes (1892–1982)
