A psychotic break occurs when a person experiences an episode of acute primary psychosis - generally for the first time, though it may also be after a significant symptom-free period.
Some have suggested that (however disconcerting) such a break may be a form of psychological communication, opening the way for a less ego-bound and more emotionally grounded sense of personality.

Famous quotes containing the words psychotic and/or break:
“Doubt is to certainty as neurosis is to psychosis. The neurotic is in doubt and has fears about persons and things; the psychotic has convictions and makes claims about them. In short, the neurotic has problems, the psychotic has solutions.”
—Thomas Szasz (b. 1920)
“It aint no sin if you crack a few laws now and then, just so long as you dont break any.”
—Mae West, U.S. actor, screenwriter, and A. Edward Sutherland. Peaches ODay (Mae West)
