Protective Oceanic Device - Scientific Basis and Product Development

Scientific Basis and Product Development

By producing an electromagnetic field, the POD irritates the ampullae of Lorenzini of a shark. The POD was the first electronic device that was proven successful in deterring sharks when tested by Ron Taylor and Valerie Taylor in 1992. It was a personal mobile protection unit for one person and cannot replace shark nets that are used to protect whole beaches. The original "SharkPOD" was developed and marketed by the Natal Sharks Board in South Africa. It was tested for eight years off Dyer Island with mainly great white sharks.

Ron and Valerie Taylor tested the first POD on sharks in Australia and South Africa with positive results and made a documentary about it called 'Shark POD'.

Famous quotes containing the words scientific, basis, product and/or development:

What happened at Hiroshima was not only that a scientific breakthrough ... had occurred and that a great part of the population of a city had been burned to death, but that the problem of the relation of the triumphs of modern science to the human purposes of man had been explicitly defined.
    Archibald MacLeish (1892–1982)

Brutus. How many times shall Caesar bleed in sport,
That now on Pompey’s basis lies along,
    No worthier than the dust!
Cassius. So oft as that shall be,
So often shall the knot of us be called
The men that gave their country liberty.
    William Shakespeare (1564–1616)

Everything that is beautiful and noble is the product of reason and calculation.
    Charles Baudelaire (1821–1867)

For the child whose impulsiveness is indulged, who retains his primitive-discharge mechanisms, is not only an ill-behaved child but a child whose intellectual development is slowed down. No matter how well he is endowed intellectually, if direct action and immediate gratification are the guiding principles of his behavior, there will be less incentive to develop the higher mental processes, to reason, to employ the imagination creatively. . . .
    Selma H. Fraiberg (20th century)
