Protected Health Information

Protected Health Information

Protected health information (PHI) is any information about health status, provision of health care, or payment for health care that can be linked to a specific individual. This is interpreted rather broadly and includes any part of a patient's medical record or payment history.

PHI is often sought out in datasets for de-identification before researchers share the dataset publicly. When researchers remove PHI from a dataset they do so in an attempt to preserve privacy for research participants.

Famous quotes containing the words protected, health and/or information:

Wasn’t marriage, like life, unstimulating and unprofitable and somewhat empty when too well ordered and protected and guarded. Wasn’t it finer, more splendid, more nourishing, when it was, like life itself, a mixture of the sordid and the magnificent; of mud and stars; of earth and flowers; of love and hate and laughter and tears and ugliness and beauty and hurt?
    Edna Ferber (1887–1968)

A major difference between witches and psychotherapists is that witches see the mental health of women as having important political consequences.
    Naomi R. Goldenberg (b. 1947)

I believe it has been said that one copy of The Times contains more useful information than the whole of the historical works of Thucydides.
    Richard Cobden (1804–1865)
