Proposed VFL/AFL Clubs - North Melbourne (1907, 1921)

North Melbourne (1907, 1921)

After the split between the VFL and VFA, North Melbourne become somewhat of a powerhouse club in the VFA, and felt that it had a right to compete at the higher level. In an attempt to gain admission to the VFL, it merged with West Melbourne in 1907, to begin playing in 1908. The merged club's jumper was dark blue with a white yolk (representing North), and a red sash (representing West). The proposal was rejected and Richmond and University were admitted into the VFL instead, and the merged club continued as North Melbourne in the VFA.

In another attempt to gain admission, North Melbourne proposed a merger with Essendon in 1921. The proposal was rejected and both clubs continued in their previous states, with North Melbourne finally gaining admission to the VFL in 1925.

Famous quotes containing the word north:

We have heard all of our lives how, after the Civil War was over, the South went back to straighten itself out and make a living again. It was for many years a voiceless part of the government. The balance of power moved away from it—to the north and the east. The problems of the north and the east became the big problem of the country and nobody paid much attention to the economic unbalance the South had left as its only choice.
    Lyndon Baines Johnson (1908–1973)
